Effects of winter fishery activities on resting numbers , food and body condition of large gulls Larus argentatus and L . marinus in the south - eastern North Sea

چکیده
C Influences of fishery activities on herring gulls and great black-backed gulls (Larus argentatus, L. mannus) wintering on the island of Helgoland, south-eastern North Sea, were studied When cod flshery discards were available close to the island. 83 to 87 % of the gulls' pellets contained fishery discard remains and 70 to 73 % of all pellets consisted exclusively of these. At times when no nearby trawling took place (Christmas/New Year), numbers of herring gulls dropped by up to 86 % and numbers of great black-backed gulls by up to 80%. Similar declines were observed during a trawling moratorium in February 1998. Adults of both gull species had a significantly lower body mass during periods of no fishing around the island (13 and 24 % less, respectively). Retraps of single gulls support these findings. The results show for the first time a strong influence of discard availability on numbers and body condition of large gulls wintering in the south-eastern North Sea. Effects on gull winter mortality and thus on population dynamics can be assumed.

Interspecific differences in foraging preferences, breeding performance and demography in herring (Larus argentatus) and lesser black-backed gulls (Larus fuscus) at a mixed colony
Herring gulls Larus argentatus and lesser black-backed gulls Larus fuscus breeding at Walney Island, Cumbria, the largest breeding colony of the two species in the UK, have recently shown very different population trends. The former has declined sharply, whereas numbers of the latter have been maintained for several years. Here we compare aspects of the feeding and breeding ecology of the two s...

ABSTR•CT.--I assessed patterns of allozymic variation in Larus argentatus (Herring Gulls), L. cachinnans (Yellow-legged Herring Gulls), L. fuscus (Lesser Black-backed Gulls), L. glaucoides (Iceland Gull), L. hyperboreus (Glaucous Gulls), and L. marinus (Greater Black-backed Gull). I surveyed 34 presumed structural gene loci over 479 individuals. All birds were monomorphic and fixed for the same...
متن کاملMercury in Feathers and Blood of Gulls from the Southern Baltic Coast, Poland
Gulls were assessed as sentinels of contamination in the coastal zone of the Southern Baltic, research material being obtained from dead birds collected on Polish beaches and near fishing ports in 2009-2012. In feathers and blood of four gull species: herring gull (Larus argentatus), common gull (Larus canus), black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), and great black-backed gull (Larus ma...
متن کاملA transactional analysis of changes in parent and chick behaviour prior to separation of Herring Gulls (Larus Argentatus): A three-term contingency model.
The effect of the passage of time on parent-offspring behaviour of urban Herring Gulls (Larus Argentatus) was studied and analysed using a three-term contingency model. A behavioural sequence was initiated by the arrival of a parental adult gull, which would lead to feeding in the chick. However, with the passage of time, and approach of the separation period, this pattern changed. Chicks' begg...
متن کاملSexual Dimorphism of Large Gulls (larus Spp.)
RECENT•.3⁄4 much attention has been paid to sexual dimorphism in birds in relation to niche utilization. Storer (1966) shows that in three species of accipiters the smaller males take smaller prey on the average than do the females, and he suggests intraspecific competition may be partly responsible for maintaining and increasing the dimorphism, although other basic adaptive functions may also ...
